California Communities Initiative
We work to ensure California’s communities are strong and resilient places where everyone can thrive.
Since its inception, the Packard Foundation has been committed to investing locally in partnership with those working to help ensure that the promise and possibility of California is attainable for all.
Our state is a global leader in business, innovation, and creativity, home to an incredibly diverse population, vibrant culture, and unparalleled natural beauty – but the challenges our communities face are more complex than ever. We have a deepening housing crisis, the impacts of climate change threaten communities with limited resources, and many families don’t have access to clean air and water or green space to get outdoors safely. These challenges stand in the way of many families’ ability to build the lives they want.
Through our California Communities initiative, we support partners working across the state to bring about a future California where everyone can thrive, in which:
- Families have stable, affordable housing, so they can put down roots and be active in their communities;
- Everyone, regardless of income or zip code, has access to clean air and water and safe green spaces for recreation, so they can be healthier and build resilience to the effects of climate change; and
- Individuals and families have trusted local organizations they can turn to for support, resources, and a sense of community.
Our grantmaking is focused in Fresno, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties, building on decades of collaboration with leaders in these communities. We also pursue statewide opportunities to scale community-led solutions and ensure policies reflect the experiences of people and families across our state.
