About Milos Popovic's Work

My research interests are at the crossroads of seeking out new photonic device concepts based on ideas in electromagnetism and device physics using light and its interaction with matter, and CMOS chip technology. In 2015, my research group, with collaborators, demonstrated the world’s first microprocessor chip that communicates with the outside world using light. In the same year, we demonstrated the first quantum entangled photon pair source on a CMOS chip. In 2018, we demonstrated how photonic devices could be implemented in any CMOS chip technology, including the most advanced transistor technologies such as FinFETs. My current interests are pursuing the use of guided and confined sound waves and their interaction with light in nanoscale devices on chip, radio-frequency signal processing using photonic devices, novel photonic platforms and nonlinear optical devices – to enable new kinds of electronic-photonic systems on a chip.
