We are committed to protecting your privacy when you interact with us. This Privacy Statement (“Privacy Statement” or “Statement”) sets out the privacy practices for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (“Packard Foundation”, “Foundation”, “us” or “we”) with respect to information we obtain from and about individuals interacting with the Packard Foundation and its websites including (our “Site”). This Statement does not apply to Packard Foundation employees.

By providing information to us on our Site or by any means, e.g., when applying for employment, applying for (or receiving) grants or fellowships, attending events or programs, visiting our offices, or otherwise, you consent to our use of the information you provide in accordance with this Statement. This Statement is incorporated into our Terms & Conditions. Information We Collect

We collect information from you when you voluntarily provide it to us and when you visit our website certain information is automatically collected from you. We collect information that you provide to us in various ways including electronically (e.g., via email or a grantee portal), by phone, and in person when you attend a convening or when you visit our facilities. The types of information we may collect from you are described below.
Information you provide directly to us

Contacting Us

When you contact us via phone, email or in person, for any reason, including when you:
• Submit a job inquiry;
• Request information about applications, programs, activities or events;
• Request to be added to our email distribution lists via the Site or by opting-in;
• Participate in surveys, panels or research;
• Send email messages or feedback, submit forms or transmit other information to us electronically;
• Register for and participate in our programs, activities, initiatives and events;
• Participate in interactive services or online communities hosted by us;
• Interact with us via any social media platform including Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram; or
• In conjunction with any other place where you knowingly volunteer information to us,

we may collect the following types of information from you:
• Contact information (such as name, address, date of birth, email address and phone number);
• Organization name, address, email address and phone number;
• Survey responses;
• Preferences, information about a disability or requests for accommodations to the extent disclosed to us;
• Event registration information (contact information such as name, email address, phone number, guest names, administrative assistant’s contact information, and travel information) for events or programs we host or co-sponsor;
• Account log-in credentials for the grantee portal;
• Financial information you provide to us related to the grantmaking process;
• Any other information you provide to us voluntarily as part of the grantmaking or investment process;
• Photographs, images, video and other user-generated content such as materials that you may submit to us;
• Job applicant data (such as name, email, resume, social media profiles (e.g., LinkedIn), cover letter, and any other information you submit as part of your application); and
• Other information or content that you may choose to provide.

Site Visits

When you visit the Site, or sign up for our email newsletter via the Site, we may collect the following types of information from you:
• Name and email address; and
• Other information that you may choose to provide.

Employment Applicants

If you apply for a position with the Foundation you may be asked to create an account on our third-party recruiting platform, and via the platform we may collect the following types of information during the application process:
• Name, address, date of birth, gender, email address and phone number;
• Resume, work history, work authorization status, education, skills, professional licenses, permits or certifications and references;
• Other information you choose to provide during the application process.

If we offer you employment, you may be required to complete a background check and other screenings prior to beginning work.

Grant Recipients, Fellows and Mission Investees (including during any application process), Mission Investing Applicants or Recipients

If you apply for or receive a fellowship, grant or mission investments from the Foundation, or if your employer or organization includes information about you in a grant application or annual report, we may collect the following types of information during the application process:
• Name, address, date of birth, gender, email address and phone number;
• Resume, work history, qualifications, salary, education, skills, professional licenses, permits or certifications and references;
• Other information you choose to provide during the application or process.


If you are a third-party who provides products or services to the Foundation you may be asked to provide information and we may collect the following types of information from you:
• For individual suppliers: name, address, email address, phone number, W-9, tax identification numbers, and bank account information for payments;
• For organizations that are suppliers: organization name, address, email address, phone number, W-9, tax identification numbers, and bank account information for payments; and
• Other information that you may choose to provide.

Other Interactions with the Foundation and our agents

In some instances, Foundation personnel and our agents may observe and/or document information in the course of your participation in programs, events or activities. Personal information collected in this manner is used in accordance with our philanthropic mission to further Foundation programs, to advance potential collaborations, to identify programmatic initiatives in which an individual may want to participate, and to identify constituents with which the Foundation should engage in support of advancing its charitable mission.

Information automatically collected

Online Tracking

Our Site automatically gathers certain traffic information, such as Internet Protocol (“IP”) addresses and other numeric codes used to identify a computer. This information is aggregated and may not personally identify you. It is collected to help us improve the Site and the services we offer. For example, we may use IP addresses to monitor Site usage to better prepare for anticipated traffic patterns.


Cookies are small text files used to collect information and pixels are transparent images that allow us to understand how users interact with our Site. We use cookies and other similar technologies to maximize the performance of our Site and services, improve functionality by detecting and/or remembering some features of your device, region and language choices you make, including:

• IP address, the type of browser or device that you are using, referring and exit pages, domain and other system settings and operating system; and

Information we receive from third parties

We may receive the following information from third parties:
• Information about your participation in programs, events, activities or social media (from program leaders or participants and partner organizations including in annual reports);
• Work and qualification information and/or contact information submitted by your employer or organization in connection with a grant or fellowship application that includes you;
• Contact information submitted by your employer or organization in connection with registering as a vendor;
• Contact or organizational information about you from third parties who refer you to us for grantmaking, fellowship or mission investing.
• Information about your website usage from web analytics service providers;
• Employment verification (from your previous employer if you provide us with contact information on a grant or fellowship application or in connection with applying for a position);
• Education information (from your previous academic institutions if you provide the names of institutions on a grant or fellowship application or in connection with applying for a position); and
• Reference information (from any references you provided on a grant or fellowship application or in connection with applying for a position).

How We Use the Information We Collect

We use your personal information to
• Send email newsletters;
• Process grant or fellowship applications;
• Provide and administer programs, grants, fellowships, mission investing or convenings in which you participate;
• Manage investments related to our mission;
• Disburse vendor payments;
• Disburse grant, fellowship or mission investing funds;
• Respond to your inquiries and/or requests;
• Compare and review your personal information for errors, omissions and accuracy;
• Recommend you for other fellowships, grants, or other opportunities;
• Solicit grant or fellowship applications;
• Monitor fraud, and for compliance, safety and security;
• Provide you information relevant to the grants, fellowship or other programs we think might interest you (e.g., to notify you about a research opportunity or job opening);
• Process your employment application, including assessing your qualifications for a job, conducting reference checks, communicating with you about your application as permitted by applicable law;
• Advance the objectives of the Foundation, including diversity, equity and inclusion in our own grantmaking and across the field of philanthropy;
• Send you information regarding changes to our terms and policies;
• Resolve disputes and to enforce our agreements with you, including our Site Terms & Conditions; and
• We may also use your information for other purposes disclosed at the time of collection or otherwise compatible with the above and applicable law.

We may combine your personal information with data we receive from publicly available sources.

Legal Interests

We reserve the right to report to law enforcement agencies any activities that we in good faith believe to be unlawful. Additionally, we may use your information as we believe to be necessary or allowed: (a) under applicable law; (b) to comply with legal process and our legal obligations; (c) to respond to requests or requirements from public, law and government authorities (including national security and law enforcement requirements) and private parties; (d) to enforce our Terms and Conditions; (e) to protect our operations or defend our interests in legal, administrative or other proceedings, which may require us to disclose personal information with other parties to the proceedings and their external counsel; (f) to protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of you or others; (g) to allow us to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain; and (h) to prevent or stop activity we may consider to be, or is at risk of being, illegal, unethical, or legally actionable activity.

We use information we automatically collect from our Site to

• Statistically analyze and understand how visitors use our Site;
• Improve our content, programs and activities;
• Administer, maintain and improve our Site’s content, layout, and services;
• Understand how you found out about us and what programs, grantmaking areas or opportunities may interest you so we can improve and deliver to you the type of content, features or promotions that are most relevant to you; and
• Monitor and prevent fraud, and other safety or security purposes.

Sharing Your Information with Third Parties

We do not sell your information. However, we may share your information in the following circumstances:

Our vendors and service providers

We may provide some of our services through contractual arrangements with other companies and service providers who process information on our behalf, in particular, for IT support, hosting and maintenance services, marketing and email automation platforms, other mailing or delivery/transport services, managing our institutional and individual relationships and facilitating programs or events, and maintaining our investment management systems.

We endeavor to share your personal information only with vendors and service providers who will respect your personal information. Although our treatment of your personal information is governed by this Statement, our vendors’ or service providers’ treatment of your personal information will be governed by the vendors’ or service providers’ privacy policy.

We use third-party services such as Google Analytics that may use cookies to collect certain information, as described above in the Information Automatically Collected section.

We also share your information with accounting and consulting firms and external counsel.

Organizational partners

We may also occasionally share your personal information with our organizational and funding partners, grantees, reviewers, or co-sponsors of our programs, activities or initiatives from time to time. We endeavor to share your personal information only with partners, grantees, and co-sponsors who will respect your personal information.

Protection of rights

We may transfer information to protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, including our employees, contractors and agents, when we are required or permitted to do so by law.

At your request

We may transfer information to a third party with your consent to do so.

Do Not Track

Some browsers have a “Do Not Track” feature. At this time, the Site does not respond to these Do Not Track requests or similar signals that users may employ.
