We investigate the molecular mechanisms that govern root growth behavior and responses to mechanical information in their environment, using Arabidopsis thaliana and Brachypodium distachyon as model plant species. Our laboratory uses methodologies that derive from forward, reverse and population genetics, along with systems biology, cell biology, biochemistry and physiology, to better understand the mechanisms that modulate root growth responses to gravity, microgravity and touch stimulation. We also investigate more complex behaviors that result from exposure to conflicting directional cues within the environment. In the longer term, information derived from these projects may lead to the design and development of new cultivars with improved root system architecture, potentially capable of higher yields under adverse environmental conditions.
