My research interest lies in the study of a new class of materials, called “photonic crystals”, which are able to control the behaviors of light in much the same way semiconductor crystals influence the behavior of electrons. Such material system provides a new dimension in our ability to control the properties of light, and is leading to new device structures for use in virtually every area of optics and photonics. The main theme of my research is the development of new computational and theoretical tools that allow us to explore the new photonic physics and to computationally prototype new device technology in photonic crystals.
