Our best end-to-end test of cosmology, comparing my team’s measured size of the universe today to the predicted size of the universe today using early-universe measurements and our standard model of cosmology, fails. This failure may be a sign that we are on the brink of the biggest discovery in cosmology in the last twenty years – that we may finally learn something new about dark energy, the unknown substance making up 70% of the universe. A Packard Fellowship will allow me to connect the most powerful supernova (SN) surveys to confirm or refute the tension and answer our most fundamental questions about what makes up the universe. As a result of my leadership roles in various surveys, including the one at the center of this tension, I am in the best position to answer these questions.
