The vacuum, the closest thing nature offers to true emptiness, is not empty at all. Quantum mechanics reveals that even perfect vacuum teems with restless electromagnetic fluctuations that can alter the identity of matter itself. The Xie lab develops new microscopy tools to visualize how matter is transformed by the quantum vacuum with the goal of formulating design rules for creating vacuum-enabled phases of matter that have never existed before.
