Papua New Guinea Country Report

Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) waters contain approximately 6% of the world’s coral reefs and 3% of its mangrove forests, and they account for 10% of the global tuna catch. Not surprisingly, fisheries are an important component of PNG’s economy,  accounting for approximately 1.2–1.4% of gross domestic product, and are an important source of both protein and income for many Papua New Guineans. As PNG continues to integrate into the global economy, the country’s marine resources face mounting threats, including overfishing, siltation, and pollution.
