Fostering Social and Emotional Health through Pediatric Primary Care: Common Threads to Transform Everyday Practice and Systems

Under the Pediatrics Supporting Parents initiative, this report details ways to support partnerships between pediatric primary care providers and parents to promote the social and emotional development of young children. The Center for the Study of Social Policy identifies three categories of actions for pediatric primary care providers to transform care: 1. Nurture parents’ competence and confidence; 2. Connect families to additional supports to promote healthy social and emotional development and address stressors; and 3. Develop the care team and clinic infrastructure. They also recommend building national leadership systems for change, identifying and eliminating specific systemic barriers, and supporting pediatric primary care teams and community readiness to further advance strong relationships among parents and care teams.
