Our Local Grantmaking Program builds on David and Lucile Packard’s commitment to community. We work with grantees in the five California counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties to create thriving communities where people have the resources and services they need for their daily well-being, and opportunities that enable them to explore and grow.
In celebration of our anniversary, we joined with Ashoka Changemakers and launched Building Vibrant Communities: Activating Empathy to Create Change. The special anniversary competition sought local initiatives that tap the power of empathy to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change. We are inspired by the work of the six winning organizations that received a total of $500,000 to support their work in our local communities.
In October 2014, the Foundation hosted an open house to commemorate 50 years of grantmaking, and we were joined by nearly 500 neighbors, grantees, and partners at our Los Altos, California headquarters. We were honored to announce the winners of the Activating Empathy competition at the event, which provided us the opportunity to praise ideas that are helping shape the future of our local communities.
Six outstanding organizations named winners of Building Vibrant Communities: Activating Empathy to Create Change, a community competition sponsored by our Local Grantmaking Program and conducted in partnership with Ashoka Changemakers.
President and CEO Carol Larson, Former President and Trustee Emeritus Cole Wilber, and Board Chair Susan Orr reflect on David and Lucile’s commitment to their local community at our open house.
