Founded by David Packard in 1987, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a world-class oceanographic research center.
MBARI supports cutting-edge research and development in oceanography through a dynamic collaboration of science, engineering, operations, and information dissemination. Applying new areas of technology to the exploration of the oceans is the cornerstone of the MBARI research agenda, executed through the development of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), advanced instrumentation for chemical analysis, and computer science and communication.
The Packard Foundation supports approximately 80 percent of MBARI’s annual budget and also provides funds for new facilities.
