Focus:

My research aims to develop an advanced ultra-resolution imaging method for live cells based on a new class of nanoimaging probes. Ultra-resolution imaging will enable the study of dynamic molecular events that cannot be addressed using existing methods. Overall, my research provides a new chemical imaging platform as a practical engineering tool for the biological sciences. Specifically, we are developing: 1) a new class of dendrimer-based nanoimaging probes, which promise to enable intracellular imaging with exquisite spatiotemporal resolution, and 2) a single cell microfluidic method to investigate cell response to dynamic growth environments such as oxygen. Using these tools, we will study the relationship between molecular organization in chromosome structure and gene expression in bacteria, which plays a major role in cell decision-making but has been poorly understood in microbiology due to a lack of imaging tools.
