LOS ALTOS, California—The David and Lucile Packard Foundation announced today the appointment of Linda Griego, a successful entrepreneur with a strong background of civic leadership and government service, to its Board of Trustees.
Susan Packard Orr, Chair of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, stated, "Linda's experience as a successful entrepreneur and in leading community coalitions addressing difficult social issues makes her a valued addition to our Board. Our Board and staff look forward to working with and learning from her in the years to come."
For the past two decades, Ms. Griego has served as president and chief executive officer of Griego Enterprises, Inc., a business management company that oversees operations of Engine Co. No. 28, a prominent downtown Los Angeles restaurant that she founded in 1988. As the developer, she was responsible for the renovation of the 1912 historical firehouse into a restaurant and office complex. More recently, she has begun developing television programming aimed at the Latino market. She is also the managing director of Oso Ranch and Lodge in New Mexico.
Ms. Griego has long-standing involvement in the banking industry. From 2003 until 2006, she served on the advisory board of U.S. Bank. From 1998 until 2003, she served as a Los Angeles director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. She has also served on the boards of Tokai Bank of California and First Interstate Bank. In 1995, Griego was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the NAFTA's North American Development Bank Community Adjustment Committee (under the auspices of the U.S. Treasury), a position she held for five years.
From 1990 until 2000, Ms. Griego held government-related appointments including an interim assignment as president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Community Development Bank, a $430 million federally funded empowerment zone development bank. Ms. Griego served as president and chief executive officer of Rebuild LA (RLA) from 1994 until 1997. The agency was created in 1992 to spearhead a riot recovery plan. Under her leadership, the agency concentrated its efforts on building new supermarkets and rebuilding shopping centers in low-income communities; and establishing local supplier networks between small manufacturing firms and large companies, which resulted in increased jobs. From 1991 to 1993, Ms. Griego served as Los Angeles deputy mayor in charge of economic development. Her responsibilities included budget review and oversight of city departments.
Griego serves as a trustee or director on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, and has received several business and civic leadership awards over the years from organizations that include UCLA, the City of Hope, California State University at Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Business Council. Griego received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
In accepting her appointment, Griego said, "I am excited to join the Foundation's Board of Trustees and become part of an organization working so hard to make a difference in our communities and the world."
