The long-term goal of the Domestic Reproductive Rights subprogram is to protect and promote the rights of all individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive lives. This includes access to reproductive health information and reproductive health care services, particularly safe and legal abortion.
What We Fund
Through funding to NGOs in the United States, our grantmaking seeks to:
- Inform and support the development of effective policies to uphold access to reproductive health services, particularly safe and legal abortion. We support organizations to: conduct relevant research, analysis, and policymaker education; monitor implementation of existing policies; undertake litigation; and educate and engage supporters. We fund efforts to defeat onerous restrictions to abortion access and to inform policies to uphold comprehensive access.
- Build an influential and active base of supporters willing to educate policymakers, community leaders, and other decision makers about the importance of reproductive health and rights and access to abortion. We make grants to develop new alliances and leaders. We fund efforts to create and test communications approaches that increase understanding. We look specifically at ways to engage young people and diverse constituencies, and to foster leadership that can speak to these groups. We also invest in initiatives that strengthen the effectiveness of the reproductive rights field through learning and strategic coordination.
Geographic Focus
We prioritize funding for policy work at a state level. In general, we work with national organizations with good track records for providing information, research, and support to state-level leaders and organizations.
In a limited number of cases, we may fund state-based organizations directly. States are selected based on need, importance, and potential for impact. California is a priority state given its national significance, demographic profile, and the Foundation's history of working in the state.
Unsolicited proposals are not accepted for this subprogram.
