California Coast
California Coast

The goal of the California Coast subprogram is to bring about ecosystem-based conservation of coastal and marine resources along the central California Coast and to generate more effective statewide policies and programs to enhance the protection and long-term health of California's coast and ocean for future generations.

This subprogram is managed by the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation (RLFF) and seeks to achieve the following five outcomes by 2011:

  1. Marine Protected Areas: Establishment and initial implementation of a statewide network of Marine Protected Areas that meets the standards of the Marine Life Protection Act.
  2. Ecosystem-Based Management Projects: More systematic and integrated approaches to coastal and marine conservation on the Central Coast through the development of successful models of Ecosystem-Based Management.
  3. Governance Reforms: Reform of governance structures and policies, through the Ocean Protection Council, to be consistent with principles of ecosystem-based management and to ensure that conservation decisions regarding the use of coastal resources are increasingly based on independent scientific advice and make use of adaptive management principles.
  4. Ocean Constituency: Broader, deeper, and more diversified and active public support for coastal/marine conservation.
  5. Funding: Increased and more secure sources of funding for priority coastal and marine conservation activities.
