What We Fund

The Population and Reproductive Health program supports the following strategies and activities in its Global, Regional and United States grantmaking:

  • Promoting attention to and advocating for achievement of Millennium Development Goal 5(b), which calls for universal access to reproductive health services; specifically, improving access to and use of contraception and addressing the reproductive health needs of adolescents.
  • Ensuring access to safe abortion care, where legal, and comprehensive post-abortion services, counseling and contraceptives.
  • Demonstrating how family planning and reproductive health service innovations can effectively reach marginalized communities. Strategies include expanding use of mid-level providers and improving contraceptive and other reproductive health technologies.
  • Increasing political commitment to family planning and reproductive health, and integrating family planning and reproductive health into national, regional and international policies and structures (e.g. health care systems).
  • Supporting efforts that empower women leaders, women’s organizations and   women’s networks to champion family planning and reproductive health issues.
  • Investing in initiatives that increase funding for family planning and reproductive health services and improves the use of these resources.  This includes initiatives to track the status and impact of funding for family planning and reproductive health services in specific countries or globally.
  • Actions that educate and empower girls between the ages of 12 to 18 years through investments linked to specific reproductive health outcomes, including the delay of marriage and first pregnancy.
  • Innovative actions which generate use of and demand for family planning and reproductive health services, such as mass media campaigns; use of mobile and other new technologies that effectively disseminates information; and initiatives to inform social norms and educate parents, communities, and cultural and religious leaders, among others.
