One of our core values is our commitment to effectiveness and impact. Thus, strengthening the cultural competency and building the capacity of nonprofit organizations have emerged as important strategies in much of our work.
Through our Population and Reproductive Health Program, for example, we fund efforts to expand the network of organizations working on protecting women’s access to reproductive health services in the U.S. to include organizations representing and serving communities of color. The program also invests in culturally competent intermediary organizations such as the Women’s Foundation of California, which can enhance our own capacity to identify, support, and fund organizations working with diverse constituencies.
However, we acknowledge the lack of diversity within many of our grantee organizations. We anticipate taking more steps to assist organizations in prioritizing and enhancing diversity within their organizations, and to build the organizational capacity of more culturally diverse organizations by providing programmatic and organizational effectiveness support.
