The David and Lucile Packard Foundation Releases Updates on Construction Progress of New Building
January 30, 2012

LOS ALTOS, California – Today, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation released updates related to the construction progress of the Foundation’s new building, which will be located at 343 Second Street.  The building, which is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification and NetZero energy status, has been under construction since the fall of 2010 and is expected to be ready for occupancy by July 2012.

First, the Whitney Street and Second Street intersection, which forms one of the corners of the 343 building site, will be closed for approximately one month, from February 6 – March 9, 2012.  The sidewalks surround this intersection will also be closed.  While the 343 construction process created a temporary four-way stop at this intersection, the City of Los Altos has now decided to upgrade this intersection as the next step in an ongoing project to renovate the downtown area’s major intersections.  As a result, the intersection will be re-paved with clearly marked crosswalks and the four-way stop will become permanent.

Second, the Foundation has initiated green deconstruction procedures for the properties located on 350 South San Antonio Road and 366 and 388 Second Street.   Construction fencing has been placed around these properties as part of the green deconstruction process.  In addition, the deconstruction will require the closing of sidewalks near 350 South San Antonio Street, which currently houses a building formerly utilized as a bank and most recently, as the construction headquarters for the 343 Second Street project.  These properties are among several held by the Foundation.  In the future, the Foundation will utilize three lots along Second Street for staff parking in accordance with the formal agreement between the Foundation and the City of Los Altos.  The future usage of other properties still remains undetermined, but after the green deconstruction process, the properties will be minimally landscaped and secured until the Foundation makes final decisions about those properties.   As members of the community for more than four decades, the Foundation has supported the growth of Los Altos and will continue to keep the community informed of developments in the building project, so that they know what to expect during all aspects of the deconstruction and construction phases.
